The Kozlov Family: Rebuilding a Home for Nine Children After War Displacement

The Kozlov family is a foster family raising nine children, from infants to teenagers (5 months to 15 years). All of the children were taken from an orphanage. The family are internally displaced persons from Druzhkivka, Donetsk region.

In 2022, due to constant shelling, it became impossible for the family to remain in their hometown. Explosions, air raid sirens, and the destruction of civilian areas forced them to flee, leaving behind their home and most of their belongings. Like many displaced families in Ukraine, they had to begin life again with virtually nothing.

After relocating to a safer region, the family were able to purchase a house. However, the building was in poor condition and lacked basic household equipment. With nine children, everyday life is extremely difficult. The father and older children carried out repairs themselves, clearing the property and adapting the house so everyone could live together under one roof.

Living With the Ongoing Impact of War

The war continues, and so do its consequences for families and children. Adults learn, somehow, to keep functioning – to work, rebuild, and make decisions despite exhaustion and fear. Children carry the war differently. Many struggle with sleep, react strongly to loud sounds, or face difficulties in education after long interruptions.

The Kozlov family’s experience reflects the reality of thousands of Ukrainian families who are rebuilding their lives while living with ongoing uncertainty.

For large displaced families, life can fall apart over very simple things: no way to cook properly, no place to store food, no tools for school, no connection to the outside world. Your support reaches families not in headlines, but in kitchens, bedrooms, school notebooks, and in the small moments of calm that children desperately need.
